My seven year old still believes in Santa Claus, and the Tooth Fairy. Even though his older brother doesn't. I hope it last many years. I agree, it's sad when it's hard to believe in the simple things..

Country Mouse

This is the most touching thing I've read today. You gave her the perfect answer, Dawn.

I am walking the same path. My little one is getting way to much information from his big sister, but she hasn't actually asked the question straight out. She has posited her thoughts and looked for my reaction. When my son asked about it, I gave him a sarcastic: right, does all that loot really sound like something I would do? To which they both grinned and admitted could never happen. To all the ruminating I have just said - there are some things in life that you just have to believe in. I think my daughter doesn't want to know - She can't handle the truth!

Santa IS real. He's a little piece in everyone's hearts at Christmas. THAT'S how I transferred my belief from Santa a human into Santa a concept when I was, I think, 8 or 9. At least that's how my mom explained it to me. Santa doesn't have to be a yes or no question.

This was a touching post. Really.

I remember screaming at my Dad, "BUT WHY DID YOU LIE TO ME?" He told me that at Christmas people are so filled with the need to give without anyone feeling indebted to them that they needed to create a whole new person from that desire to share unselfishly. It was more eloquent, but you get the gist. The fact is, I understood and was grateful.

My children are all grown and out of the house but my two 17 year olds. I have always told my children You stop believing and you stop receiving. That way they never really ask me and I still put Santa out for them. There are also filled stockings for the ones that are no longer living here.
